Most of the attention will fall on the Champions League this week but we shouldn’t forget its plucky little brother on Thursday evening as the 2017/18 Europa League gets underway. It doesn’t always get the credit it deserves but there are some stellar teams involved this year, and it is shaping up to be a cracking betting contest.

Milan And Arsenal The Clear Favourites
We have two clear favourites at the head of the outright Europa League betting this season with Arsenal and Milan the two biggest teams by some distance in the competition.
The Gunners find themselves in the Europa League for the first time in many years and on paper they certainly have one of the strongest squads in the tournament. They are packed full of players with Champions League experience which should give them an edge, although it remains to be seen how many of these players will see action.
Arsene Wenger has given strong hints that he will use the tournament to rotate his squad in a similar way to the way he treats the League Cup, and if that’s the case, their price of 8/1 with Bet365 to win the Europa League is much too short.
Milan (7/1) are much more preferred to their English counterparts in terms of an outright bet with the Rossoneri expected to treat the competition with their full respect. They have fielded strong teams in the qualifying rounds and having spent a fortune on players like Leo Bonucci, Andre Silva and Andrea Conti among others, a trophy for Milan would be a massive boost.
Sociedad The Real Deal At A Big Price?
Aside from the top two in the betting, there is plenty of depth in the outright Europa League market this season.
Everton (25/1) spent a fortune in the summer in a bid not to finish 7th again in the Premier League, and they are certainly capable of having a good season in Europe. The Toffees do have a talented squad but you worry about the demands of the Premier League on a squad with limited European experience.
The Mersey-siders have a tough job on their hands to even get out of their group with Atalanta (80/1) and Lyon (28/1) to face in the pool of death. Atalanta were the surprise package of Serie A last season and will be dangerous despite losing some of their best players, whilst Lyon remain a threat despite losing Lacazette in the window.
Spanish clubs have dominated the Europa League over the past few years with five winners out of the last eight and that means the La Liga clubs are always worth a second look. Villarreal (25/1) and Athletic Bilbao (25/1) are two towards the head of the market and both should go well if they can find their best form.
Bilbao are the preferred of those two having started the season in fine fettle in La Liga, with seven points from their first nine, and no goals conceded in the league so far.
Our attention is focused on another Spanish team though with Real Sociedad inexplicably a 50/1 shot with Bet365 to win the Europa League. Sociedad have won their first three games of the season in La Liga, scoring ten goals in the process, and they are ridiculously overpriced to go all the way when it comes to Thursday night football.
