Saturday’s Brazilian Serie A derby action sees Botafogo doing battle with Flamengo. The visitors will be desperate for the 3 points to keep their title hopes alive.
Botafogo themselves have far more than bragging rights to play for however, and will also be chasing the 3 points. Currently 14th and just 4 points above the drop zone, it’s been far from a strong campaign for Fogo’ and whilst they’re only at slight risk of being relegated, they need to try and pick up a decent points total in the 6 games that remain in order to keep their heads above water.
Nonetheless, confidence is not running high in home ranks, with a recent Copa Sudamericana quarter final exit and poor league form leaving spirits low. Ze Ricardo’s men did win 1-0 at home to Corinthians in their last outing, but that was their first league win in 6 and it’s clear for all to see those taking to the pitch will have to be at their very best to take anything against a strong Flamengo side.
Meanwhile, having drawn their last two games against Palmeiras and Sao Paulo, Flamengo will be hoping to return to winning ways to stay within touching distance of leaders Palmeiras. Currently 4 points behind them in 2nd, Mengao need a near perfect end to the season to have any hope of making up said ground, starting with a win on Saturday.
The visitors had lead the Serie A pack throughout the opening half of the campaign, but then dropped off, prompting Maurício Barbieri to be replaced in the dugout by Dorival Junior. Junior has since re-ignited Flamengo’s title bid and currently unbeaten under his watch, confidence is high in the away camp going into Saturday’s clash.
Ultimately, although Botafogo won against a Corinthians outfit that cannot buy a result on their travels in front the home crowd last time out, we cannot see them repeating the feat against a far stronger opponent this time around. The hosts have been far from impressive in recent weeks, the aforementioned win aside and we can see them struggling in this match.
As such, backing Flamengo to claim maximum points looks the way to play and is exactly where our money is going. They’re unbeaten in 4 away games and have scored an average of 3 goals a game over their last 3 trips and we envisage them running out 1-0 winners this time around.
The sides have already met 4 times this season, with Flamengo winning 3 of said fixtures, including a 2-0 win back in July.
Midfielder João Paulo is nearing a return but is expected to sit out Saturday’s match.
Centre back juan is the only absentee.
