Gary Cahill In As Gareth Southgate Confirms His England Squad For The 2018 World Cup

Gareth Southgate has named his 23-man England squad for the 2018 World Cup and there were few surprises as the likes of Jack Wilshere, Chris Smalling and Joe Hart all missed out. The trio have endured mixed campaigns at club level and Southgate has shown that there is no room for sentiment as he wielded the axe upon three of his more experienced players.

The England Squad

In a generally youthful squad, Southgate did recall Gary Cahill to the fold after the Chelsea defender forced his way back into the reckoning at club level and he is one of eight defenders, alongside John Stones, Phil Jones, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Harry Maguire, the versatile Ashley Young and Trent Alexander-Arnold, although Ryan Bertrand is another to miss out.

The 19-year-old Alexander-Arnold has enjoyed a remarkable rise with Liverpool this season and he can look forward to a Champions League final against Real Madrid next weekend before taking his place on the place to Russia for the World Cup.

The midfield looks lightweight as Jordan Henderson, Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Jesse Lingard, Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are picked, while the forwards pretty much selected themselves as Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck are all in.

The three goalkeepers heading to Russia are Jack Butland, Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope but none are a clear-cut No.1 for the tournament at this stage and it will be interesting to see who Southgate places between the sticks after leaving the error-prone Hart at home.

On Standby

Furthermore, there are five players outside of the final squad of 23 who are on standby and they include Bournemouth’s central midfielder Lewis Cook., as well as Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Tom Heaton. Jake Livermore is a controversial standby pick following a tough season with West Brom, while Adam Lallana is only a standby following an injury ravaged campaign with Liverpool.
