The end of the season may still be a long way away in Finland, but already there are plenty of concerns for sides who are underachieving and they know that they will need to start winning games as soon as possible if they are going to accomplish their goals. One such side is in action this weekend as bottom of the league VPS Vaasa make the trip to the OmaSP Stadion to take on an SJK side who will be quite content with the way their season is progressing so far.
SJK were not expected to be in and around the title race in Finland’s Veikkausliiga and a battle to stay in the country’s top division was a more likely outcome for the season. However, the hosts have so far defied those expectations and they go into this match knowing that they already have a 13 point advantage over this weekend’s visitors despite having played just 14 league matches so far. It is easy to see where their improvements have come from too as the hosts have conceded an average of just one goal per match, which represents the third best defensive record in the league.
Making the trip to the OmaSP Stadion is a VPS Vaasa side who will be desperately searching for three points to kick start their campaign. Fresh off their 2-1 defeat to fellow relegation threatened side KPV Kuopio, the visitors have now failed to win in their last 15 matches in all competitions and are bottom of the form table in the Veikkausliiga with just two points coming from their last eight matches.
Although the hosts are not exactly the most in form side around, they do boast a strong defensive record and should have enough about them to earn the three points this weekend. When you factor in that the visitors are in no sort of form and are up against a head to head record which is weighted heavily in favour of the hosts, then backing a home win looks to be the only way to go in this fixture.
SJK have the better of the head to head between these two sides with a record of 17 wins, three draws and five defeats. The sides last met in a 1-1 draw back in April.
