Recent trends would suggest that the television schedulers have had a ‘mare’ by deciding that Southampton v Newcastle should be live on Sky Sports on Sunday afternoon as goals are likely to be hard to come by when these two misfiring sides clash at the St Mary’s Stadium…
Southampton have failed to score in 11 of their last 14 home games in all competitions – Won Two, Draw Four, Lost Eight
Newcastle’s three away games have witnessed a grand total of three goals – Won One, Lost Two
Sunday 15th October – 4.00pm
Southampton v Newcastle
Under 2.5 goals
@ 3 / 4
Pick A Winner
Newcastle are in decent form going into this game as they have only lost one of their past five Premier League games (won three, drawn one) following their 1-1 draw with Liverpool before the international break and Rafa Benitez’s men have made a solid start to life back in the top-flight.
The Magpies are a decent bet to win or draw at Evens in the ‘double chance’ market (Unibet) as they come up against a Southampton side that would struggle to hit a barn door with a banjo…
Lack Of Goals
Southampton have now failed to score in eleven of their past fourteen home games in all competitions and their fans must be growing weary of the lack of entertainment. Not even a change in manager has helped their goal scoring fortunes as Mauricio Pellegrino has seen his men fail to score in the last 270 minutes of action at St Mary’s, while it is worth noting that two of their goals in the 3-2 win over a poor West Ham side in August came courtesy of penalties.
It is difficult to see where goals are going to come from for Southampton and under 2.5 goals is a stand-out bet at 3/4 with Unibet.co.uk, who go 23/10 about under 1.5 goals.
Newcastle are hardly flush with goals either as their three away games have witnessed a grand total of three goals, with 1-0 losses at Huddersfield and Brighton coming either side of a 1-0 win at Swansea.
It is difficult to make a case for either team having enough about them to win on Sunday and the 0-0 correct score at 9/1 (William Hill) is the most appealing outcome, albeit it will be a committed fan who watches the full 90 minutes!
