West Ham v Stoke – Monday 16th April 2018, 20:00 (London Stadium)

Although what may seem to many to be a damp squib of a game, the focus between West Ham United and Stoke City being surely on one man does provide some intrigue. Marko Arnautović left the Potters in the summer under fairly acrimonious circumstances.During December’s 3-0 win for the Hammers at the bet365 Stadium, the Austrian wasn’t the most diplomatic with his celebrations, and offered ex-manager Mark Hughes, now of Southampton, a similar courtesy in the recent 3-0 home win over Saints.

After he was bought by Slaven Bilic, the Austrian registered no goals and no assists but under David Moyes, he has been resurgent. Since the Scotsman took over in November, Arnautović has scored 9 and provided 4. If anyone is going to score against Stoke, then the script is ready. For him to score anytime, he is 6/4 (Ladbrokes). With a win for the Hammers, this goes out to 9/4 with Boylesports.

For the pessimist observing that this is a fixture that has had two bore-draws in the past five meetings, perhaps backing neither teams to score is best 5/4 (BetVictor). Stoke haven’t won a league game since mid-January- a loss to West Ham will take this run to ten games. They have also failed to score more than one goal throughout this period, since that 2-0 victory over Huddersfield. They have the joint worst number of losses in the league, and have- by far- the worst goal difference, even than bottom of the table West Bromwich Albion.

West Ham and Moyles will be looking to gain some momentum in this final sprint of the 17/18 season. Their home record is respectable, in all competitions, they’ve lost only once in seven at the London Stadium. The 3-0 against Saints at the end of last month was the first time they’ve scored more than two goals at home in the league since January 2017.

This is highly unlikely to to be a free-scoring game, with both teams likely cagey about rewarding the other with vital points to try and move away from the relegation zone. West Ham to take advantage of the setting of East London, and make it three games without a loss, total goals within the match to be under 3.5 and West Ham to win is offered at 13/8 at BoyleSports.

West Ham v Stoke Odds

Xerdan Shaquiri has been the one vaguely shining light for the Potters. He had an excellent February, scoring in every game throughout, but hasn’t since that month. For him to break this, on the back of four consecutive losses for Stoke, he is 17/2 to open the scoring with bet365.

An interesting aspect might be, after Joe Hart’s excellent performance against Chelsea as he re-auditions for Russia, with the resulting 1-1, Betfair and Paddypower both offer 20/1 for the West Ham goalkeeper- whether that be the Englishman or Adrian- to be awarded Man of the Match against Stoke.
